Spring is getting closer and the parks will start to fill with beautiful flowers soon. The most famous are the cherry blossoms, or “sakura,” but did you know that there is another similar type of flower that blooms one month before them? These are plum blossoms.
The biggest difference is in their petals. While the plum flowers have round petals, the cherry blossoms’ petals are heart-shaped, with a split at the end of each one.
When we talk about their buds, the plum flowers always come out of a single bud, and they are always alone. Cherry blossoms blossom in groups, a lot of them coming from the same bud.
There is also a difference in color. There are more than 54 species of cherry trees and their colors range from light pink to dark pink. The plum blossoms, on the other hand, can be not only pink, but also white and yellow sometimes.
Look forward to Part 2, when we will introduce some of the best locations in Tokyo to view plum blossoms!
